Share Your Christmas
Each year we get names of worthy local families for presents from Urban Ministries, and we place their names on the tree for each of our congregation to take the note, buy a Christmas present, and return by Sunday, December 13th when we arrange delivery to the families. This "Share Your Christmas" program was successfully led by Marie Hopkins, who again did an excellent job helping those in need. The following is a brief summary of some of the recipients:
- Family 1 were the residents of Rose Manor. This was our second year visiting, caroling and giving gifts to those who are sometimes forgotten. We began with a group session in their community area and ended with personal room to room visits to those with physical limitations. It is quite rewarding to be a part of their holiday interactions and they truly appreciate our efforts.
- Family 2 is a 82 yr old woman who lives independently with significant health issues. Her requests were quite minimal and during our phone interview we tried to determine her needs and wishes, she told us that our phone call to her was gift enough. She was sincere and wanted to chat about her life and successes and the things that made her happy. When we delivered her gifts, she was truly amazed at the generosity and spent our time together recanting stories and showing photos.
- Family 3 is a single Mom struggling with her 4 children. She has a good job, is working hard but there is little left over for extras. Her profile listed the children's needs and requests but there was nothing entered for Mom. Once again, through our interview she disclosed that all she wanted was her children to be happy this Christmas. Now you know we made sure Mom had a few items to help her feel appreciated.
- Family 4 is facing major financial constraints, a disability, and failing health. When asked about what their greatest need was, they responded "food". Food gift baskets and gift cards later, we also made sure they received some personal items to boost their spirits.
- Family 5 has been involved with St Luke's for sometime and has become more independent through perseverance and the support they have received. They requested what we would consider the basics and they were ever so grateful for anything provided.
By being thoughtful about our requests and by sharing basic information regarding the families, most of our donors from St. Luke's are more than willing to lend a hand. We are particularly proud of the response to the needs of our seniors. Poverty knows no age limits and we often think of projects like this to be limited to procuring toys for children. More and more, our family profiles include an extended family model. Three of this year's families included a Mom in their nineties! Most importanly, this is truly a group effort by all the members of St Luke's!!!!
