Education for Children

St. Luke's welcomes children starting at four years of age to participate in a Montessori approach to Christian education.  Based in scripture and tradition, the "Godly Play" program helps children grow in faith in ways that fit their age and development.

Schedule (traditional school calendar): Sunday School 9:20-10:20; Children's Chapel: 10:30-11:10

Classes are divided into younger (age 4 to grade 2) and older (grades 3-5)

Children's chapel is for ages 4 to 8.  Click here for more information.

Summer Schedule: Children's chapel 10:00-10:40

The Godly Play program, setting, materials, and teacher style are based on the ideas of Jerome Berryman (Godly Play) and Sonja Stewart (Young Children and Worship).  Our trained teachers use open inquiry and a structured space to support children as they grow in their relationship to God.  They tell stories in ways that children understand but don't tell them what to think.  Instead, teachers invite children to "wonder."  "I wonder what was the most important part of the story for  you."  "I wonder why the characters in the story acted the way they did." Hands-on materials make the stories come alive.  Children eventually learn the stories by hand and by heart as they play with the materials on their own or with a teacher.  Children also create works of art to show how the story feels to them.  Older children are invited to explore Bible maps and prophet studies as they become more advanced.

At the close of each session, the Storyteller lights the Christ candle, reads scripture, and sends forth our young parishioners into the world.  Through Godly Play, these children are learning habits to help them talk and listen to God.

We hope your children will come wonder and worship with us.
