Ministers, Staff and Lay Leaders
St. Luke's is blessed with outstanding clergy and lay leadership. Our clergy inspire and challenge us. St. Luke's is further served by four staff members. Our lay leaders include the Vestry, the Church Treasurer, and the chairs of a full range of programs, activities, and committees. All of St. Luke's parishioners are considered ministers of God, called to carry the good news of Jesus Christ into all aspects of their lives.
Clergy
Rector
The Reverend Anne E. Hodges-Copple, email address: rector@stlukesdurham.org

Anne Hodges-Copple has a long association with the parish. Ordained a priest at St. Luke’s in 1988, she was Assistant to the Rector from 1987, until 1992. She then served as the Episcopal Chaplain to Duke University from 1992 until September 2005 when she returned to St. Luke’s as the Rector, time certain. Prior to ordination Mrs. Hodges-Copple was director of shelters for battered women and their children in Raleigh and in Durham and a community organizer in Massachusetts and in Kentucky. She has B.A from Duke and an M.Div from the Pacific School of Religion. She and her husband, John, have three children.
Bishop-in-Residence and Rector Emeritus
The Right Reverend Robert C. Johnson, Jr.
Bob Johnson was born in Columbus, Georgia. While a college student at Mercer University, he served as a Southern Baptist pastor. He continued on to earn a Master’s of Divinity from Yale University and then an M.A. from NC State University. He was ordained in the Episcopal Church in 1964. After serving as Assistant to the Rector at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte from 1964 to 1966, he served as Rector of St. Paul’s in Smithfield and then Priest-in-Charge at St. Christopher’s in Garner, N.C.; during his time in Garner, he was an English instructor at NC State. He was called to St. Luke’s in 1975 where he served as Rector for 19 years. The people of St. Luke’s were both saddened and proud when Reverend Johnson was elected and then consecrated as Bishop of North Carolina on May 14, 1994. Bishop Johnson retired in 2000 and all St. Luker’s are delighted that he has returned to St. Luke’s as Bishop-in-Residence and Rector Emeritus. Bishop Johnson has been awarded the Doctor of Divinity from both University of the South in Sewanee and Yale in New Haven.
Assistant to the Rector
The Reverend Joe Hensley, email address: assistant-rector@stlukesdurham.org
Joe Hensley is a lifelong Episcopalian. He grew up in Greensboro, NC and attended the NC School of Science and Math (1992), Oberlin College and UNC Chapel Hill (BA Philosophy 1996). Joe has worked as an Outward Bound instructor, parish youth minister (Holy Trinity Episcopal, Greensboro), and conflict resolution consultant for schools and families (Dispute Settlement Center, Carrboro, NC). He graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary and was ordained deacon in May 2007. He was ordained to the priesthood in December 2007. Joe and his wife, Sarah White, have had three children: Lucy (2002) Alice (born and deceased 2005) and Stella (2007).
Priest Associate
The Reverend James B. Craven, III
Jim Craven has been at St. Luke's since 1992. Jim was ordained a deacon at the Duke Chapel in 1985 and, after only ten years and two weeks, was ordained a priest here at St. Luke's in 1995. He was a volunteer prison chaplain for 17 years. Jim has been a lawyer for 40 years, ordained for 22 years, is a retired naval officer, and still doesn't know what he wants to be when he grows up. We let him preach and celebrate regularly, and occasionally he does services without adult supervision. Educated, after a fashion, at the U.S. Naval Academy, UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke Law School, and the Duke Divinity School, Jim's real passions are Durham Bulls baseball, Duke football, and fishing. He and Sara are the parents of Jamie, Joe, and Will, and the grandparents of Oliva and Harris. And they share their home with their cats, Louise and Ruthie.
Deacon
The Reverend Jan Lamb
Jan Lamb wears many hats around the parish. She chair the Outreach Committee and shares leadership in many of St. Luke’s mission teams. Jan has a BA from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS and a M.Ed. in learning disabilities from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a member of the faculty of The Hill Center, where she teaches high school students who have learning differences. Her community ministry focuses on literacy issues and education. Jan was ordained to the Diaconate in June, 2006. She is the mother of John and Michael Lamb and the grandmother of Ruthie and Saro.
Deacon
The Reverend Dr. Lauren Winner
Lauren F. Winner came to St. Luke’s as an intern in 2005, and after two years of an internship, and several other years of just hanging around, she is with us now as a deacon. She looks forward to celebrating her ordination to the priesthood here at St. Luke’s in December. When Lauren is not haunting St. Luke’s, you can find her at Duke Divinity School, where she is the Assistant Professor of Christian Spirituality. Lauren is the author of several books, including Girl Meets God, Mudhouse Sabbath, and Still: Notes on a Mid-faith Crisis. Her favorite things include October weather, mystery novels, and doodling prayer (see Sybil MacBeth’s Praying in Color if you’d like to know more about that last one).
Staff
Parish Administrator
Ms. Kathy Barnes
Kathy Barnes has been with St. Luke's since 1994 and has been working in the secretarial/administrative field since 1970. She obtained her CPS (Certified Professional Secretary) rating in 1992 and was recertified in 2003.

Ms. Kaye Saunders
Kaye Saunders has been involved in church music for most of her life. Currently Director of Music/Organist at St. Luke's, she was full-time Organist and Choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Church in Myrtle Beach, SC for seventeen years. During her tenure there she founded a Royal School of Church Music-based graded children's choir program, traveling to England with her choir in 2007 to perform in the International Children's Choir Festival. She was also very involved in Trinity's acquisition and restoration of an 1876 Johnson and Sons three-manual tracker pipe organ.
Kaye is a certified instructor at the Pre-K level of the early childhood curriculum Musikgarten which she taught as part of the Trinity music program and also its preschool. She also founded the Trinity Performing Arts Series, which during its thirteen-year existence presented over eighty musical concerts and events in the parish and community, including a widely-attended annual performance of Handel's Messiah with orchestra. She enjoys her work as a vocalist, having sung throughout the Southeast during her years in South Carolina where she was a featured soloist with many organizations such as Piccolo Spoleto (Charleston), The Long Bay Symphony, Carolina Master Chorale, Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art, and in many other community venues. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Coastal Carolina University, a Master's Degree in Sacred Music from the Graduate Theological Foundation, has done doctoral studies in music at the University of South Carolina, and has taught as an adjunct instructor. Kaye currently resides outside the Chapel Hill area where she practices real estate and teaches private voice. She has two adult children: Lauren, who lives in Chapel Hill and sings in the St. Luke's Choir, and Nick, who lives in Myrtle Beach.
Director of Hospitality and Nursery Attendant
Ms. Carol Joyner
Ms. Carol Joyner is the Director of Hospitality and Nursery Attendent at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. For many years, "Miss Carol" has been a familiar, comforting presence in the nursery for the youngest members of our St. Luke's family as well as for young visitors. More recently, she has taken on leadership of our two after-church coffee hours, helping to welcome and provide for members and guests of St. Luke's.
